If you have a damaged disc, a discography is a diagnostic tool to identify which disc in your spine is responsible for your pain symptoms. As you age or if you have an injury, the walls of the spinal discs can become inflamed or damaged. Common conditions may include degenerative disc disease or internal disc disruption. Disc pain is generally a deep ache that can radiate into the buttocks or the thigh.
The discography method enables your physician to view the internal structure of a disc. A contrast dye is injected into the spinal disc(s) that are thought to be the source of your back pain. Through careful monitoring of the flow pattern of the dye and your pain response is recorded.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and generally takes 30-45 minutes.
