Trigger Point Injection

Trigger Point Injection

A trigger point is a painful knot or tight muscle that forms when your muscles fail to relax.  They are generally found in the neck, upper back and shoulder areas.  A trigger point injection involves the injection or medication directly into the trigger point.  It can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions including:

  • Tension headache
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial pain syndrome

Trigger point injections are a simple procedure performed in the office.  This outpatient procedure involves a small needle that is inserted into the trigger point and a local anesthetic.  Injection of medication inactivates the trigger point and helps to alleviate or eliminate trigger point pain.  Trigger point injection procedures generally take 30-45 minutes.
